The result of the Capes-Natura Campus Award for Excellence in Research has been disclosed. The names of the winners were announced at a ceremony held in Brasilia on Tuesday the 22nd. In the sustainability category, Fernando Couto Rosa Almeida, a Ph.D. student at Glasgow Caledonian University in Scotland, was the author of the winning article. In the socio-biodiversity and biological conservation category, the winner was Diogo Soares Samia, a researcher at the Federal University of Goiás.

The initiative is a partnership between Natura and the Coordination of Improvement of Higher Level Personnel (Capes). In this first edition of the award, a total of 268 scientific papers were submitted. Three articles made the finals in each category. The winners will receive a trip to the Federal Capital and a certificate in addition to a grant of R$ 25 thousand each.

The article by Fernando Couto, won in the Sustainability category, addressing the substitution of materials obtained in nature by others which result in some value-added services, mainly regarding the environment. In the case of the research, sand replaced the sugarcane bagasse. His study advisor, Professor Bruce Salles, from São Carlos Federal University, received the award in his name since the winning student could not attend because he was in Scotland earning his doctorate.

In the socio-biodiversity and biological conservation category, the winner Diogo Soares Samia inquired into the interface between behavioral ecology and the biological conservation of birds and mammals. The study sought to identify the characteristics of the species which are most and least tolerant to the growing impact of man. Diogo’s research is in the process of being edited and will soon be published into a book. The publication touches on the promises and dangers of ecotourism, through a biological evaluation of its impacts. The launch is planned for August 2017.
